What does the work of a Technical Model Builder involve?
Technical Model Builders specialising in foundry work prepare models for cast parts on the basis of construction drawings. Within this scope they consider the moulding procedure, the properties of the casting metal and the number of moulding processes necessary. In the course of producing the models the process materials such as hardwood, plastic or metal, for example by means of turning, drilling or milling. On the basis of the models, they produce casting mould equipment or permanent moulds. It is not always necessary to produce new models, sometimes it is possible to amend or modify existing ones. Using special measuring appliances, they control the dimensions of the models and check to ensure that they function correctly.
How is the apprenticeship structured?
During the first 18 months of the apprenticeship, the trainees acquire skills and knowledge in the trainee workshops in manual and mechanical processing of different modelling materials. Furthermore apprentices acquire fundamental skills and knowledge in manual moulding, melting and casting during the course of their training. Subsequently they have the opportunity to extend their skills and knowledge of model construction in the different model construction departments of the iron and steel foundry. Throughout the apprenticeship outside college courses are supplemented by in-company lessons. Furthermore, the trainees are prepared for the forthcoming examinations by means of training exercises.
What are the most important aspects?
Handicraft skills as well as careful and precise work are as important as a good knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry. A very good spatial conception is also important for the interpretation and preparation of technical drawings of the models.
What school qualifications are required?
A very good secondary school leaving certificate or higher level school examinations.
